MONUMENTS AND SIGHT seeing spots in Mumbai:

Taj Mahal Hotel: One of the most famous city landmarks and one of the best hotels in India. Built by JN Tata in 1903, the hotel has an old and a new wing. The old wing is the most expensive and larger than the new wing. The best thing to do in the old wing is the large central staircase.

India Gate: This structure was built to commemorate the visit of King George V in 1911. Now a Landmark City People and a meeting place for local people

Flora Fountain: This fountain is named after the Roman god of wealth, was erected in 1869 in honor of Sir Bartle Frere, who was responsible for shaping much of Mumbai today. It now shares the area with a monument honoring those who died fighting to carve up the state of Maharashtra.

The University of Bombay High Court: It was during the building boom of the 1860s and 70 that most Victorian buildings were constructed, was designed by Gilbert Scott, and looks like a 15th century Italian building.

Marine Drive: Built in 1920, the marine unit runs along the Arabian Sea coast, society and the State Library of Mumbai Central Library Nariman Point past Chowpatty Malabar Hill. Marine Unit has a dramatic curve of the street lamps at night, giving the name of the Queen's necklace. Best viewed at night when viewed from the upper floors of tall buildings next to him.

ChowpattyBeach: It is an integral part of life in Mumbai. During visits to India, Chowpatty Beach is where most of the local theater takes place. Political meetings, shooting galleries, Bee Bee-gun, snake charmers and roundabouts. Chowpatty is especially famous for Bhel Puri and Chat.

Victoria Terminus: This Gothic building seems more exotic like a palace of a train station. Designed by Frederick Stevens and completed in 1887, has carvings of monkeys, peacocks and lions mixed with the domes, towers and stained glass windows. There is also the life-size statue of Queen Victoria placed in the central facade.

Mani Bhavan: This is where Mahatma Gandhi stayed during his visit to Mumbai. Its rooms have remained intact and there is an exhibition of photographs of his life. It is open daily from 9:30-6:00 and admission is free.

Juhu: Although the holidays in Mumbai, India Juhu attracting more tourists. After about 5 km long beach is lined with coconut trees and palm. It is also a popular picnic place with snack stands, vendors of toys, fruit vendors, roundabout rides and fortune tellers. The beach has many Tourists and locals enjoy fresh air or playing cricket.

Crawford Market: This market is the wholesale market for flowers, fruits, vegetables, meat and fish. This Norman Gothic structure has bas-reliefs by Lockwood Kipling, father of Rudyard Kipling. South of the market is the JJ School of Arts. This is where Rudyard Kipling born and now his place of birth is the residence of Dean.

Haji Ali Mosque: This early 18th century shrine contains the tomb of Hazrath Haji Ali, a Muslim Sufi saint. There are two local legends which claim to trace the history of the Hazrath.

Dhobi Ghats: This is where all clothing is washed in Mumbai. This municipal laundry at Mahalaxmi is where nearly 5,000 men beat the dirt from the clothes brought from all over the city. There are open air channels, which is used for washing. You can have a good view of the bridge over the railroad tracks of Mahalaxmi railway station.
