Every time you talk to players about golf instruction, they all seem very interested in the latest gadget, gimmick, trend, or secret method but mention the fundamentals of melody and out faster than you can say hare.
"That is only for beginners," they say citing their current 19 handicap as evidence that they have progressed beyond working on your grip, posture, and alignment. But talk of "X-Factor" or "Speed Stick "or" The Power Move "or" magic pill "or" inner journey "or some other trick to start new kind immediately to salivate at the thought of becoming a single digit handicapper, just by buying another videotape, DVD, or a trick.
The truth yes, you can play good golf, even with poor fundamentals, but it is much easier to get your golf game on track and keep on track if your golf swing is basically sound. There is a moment in every golf swing if being a full swing driver, a 3-meter putt or a 30-yard field, I like to call "the moment of truth. "
The "moment of truth" determines whether or not a shot that starts on the line and where it ends.
This "moment of truth ", impact is really the only thing that matters if you're hitting your driver or trying to convince footer at 3. Whether or not you can fit the face of the club to the target line at impact determines success than any single blow will be.
Take, for example, Lee Trevino. Trevino Swing was not what I would call classic, but it was very good at squaring the club face at the finish line at impact. He spent years honing his motion to a fine edge, spending countless hours on the driving range and golf courses, so you can always square the club face to its line of destination. Jim Furyk is another example someone with less talent classical movement that has great championship and has spent his life honing his golf swing, so you always can square the clubface to the line target. Fred Couples and is another example of the list goes on and on. These players, all from different set positions, have trained themselves to Square the clubface to the target line at impact and you can too.
Having said that, let me say that most of us simply do not have the time or the talent to improve our performance in this very fine edge so it's incredibly important that with limited practice and game time, we the best opportunity to throw well and that means to play our best golf courses it would behoove each of us, no matter our current disability to work on developing sound fundamentals. The alignment is easier with a good grip, good posture and good for shots that fly toward the target and that's what everyone we ….. truth?
So why the players would love to play as Tiger Woods, who consistently shoot in the top 80, 90, and worse, stay away from the fundamental concepts that help them play better and shoot lower score? Is it pride? Is it a misconception they have about what is important? What is it? I can guarantee that Tiger Woods is working diligently on fundamentals such as grip, posture, and alignment. It does so because he knows that if one of these fundamentals is a little off, it will effect full swing. He knows as all travel agencies and low handicaps.
The Good players are constantly working to develop and maintain a good grip, athletic stance, and alignment of the square.
Bad players do not. Players fighting tricks seem to work, fashion, and tricks in an effort to improve, but somehow, year after year, have a new set of clubs, new shoes, the latest golf ball technology, a new trick, and yet the same old firing shots and hit it badly.
Now I know that working on grip, posture, and alignment are not nearly as exciting as working with the latest gadget you bought on the Golf Channel that lets you hit the ball 350 yards, but if you try to work on your fundamentals as prescribed in "How To Break 90 In 3 easy lessons" you'll see the results you will not find anywhere elsewhere. Actually be surprised how well his swing is really when you get in the best position to excel.
I know Tiger knows, and knows that know …. to go out and get to work on concepts that are truly essential if you are going to shoot at the results you've always dreamed of.
