I've talked about how much I enjoyed last weekend at Augusta Masters 2009. Now, as each day passes, the more detail comes to my conscious mind. I had realized how much he had learned about the psychology of golf to watch a single event on television.
I do not know if you saw most of Sergio Garcia during the weekend and saw how unhappy he seemed to be with him and the course. It was no surprise to hear his negative comments about the course after of his final round. A quote really stuck in my mind, "I do not think is fair," he said. "It's too complicated. Even when dry yet get balls of clay in the middle of the fairway. It's too much of a guessing game. They can do whatever they want. Not my problem. I just come here and play and then go home. "
Now, it clearly was not the only one who exhibits similar feelings through body language and a particular player through his evident anger. Vi many players who hit shots apparently defective as a result of "mud balls", and saw many different reactions. I did not realize the anger of Kenny Perry, when his "mud ball" on the second playoff hole drifted left – he was disappointed – but only got on with the job of playing the ball as is, without complaint. I suspect he would have said it was the same for everyone. Perhaps that attitude got him into the playoff, but his mental game seemed to leave him on the holes in recent years.
I wonder what Justin Rose would have done if he had been in shoes Sergio García. If you read my article on Reframing positive for better golf performance as Justin Rose, he would know the answer.
Golfers who complain bitterly about the "luck of the lawn "rarely enjoy the golf course that much or do their best and I know that before coming to the psychology of golf I used to suffer like that. A possible exception Tiger Woods is his clear disgust and anger at times for simple things like "unfair" gusts of wind that affect your shots. Still surprising well despite the anger. Perhaps even better score if he could handle as good as it handles the rest of your mental game.
In a happy ending note, I loved read after Sergio's apology in the press, as I believe has the potential to be the true successor to his mentor, the great Seve Ballesteros.
