Can sports become an addiction? If so, when it is an addiction?

My husband of almost 14 years in my opinion has been a sports addict for most of his life. He commits hours and hours to watching sports, doing fantasy leagues, reading newspaper articles and magazine articles, talking on the phone with his friends regarding various cool plays, trying to make conversation with me regarding sports and wrting pages and pages of sports statistics for baseball, basketball, football and sometimes golf. I have 3 children that can play sports he coaches them. I thought the coaching of my kids would help spurse his energy towards sports to the kids a more family thing that we could enjoy together. However, he coaches very seriously as he is constantly talking about his team & making up different playing scenarios on paper and in conversation. He now heads our towns baseball/softball recreation league & has to volunteer the time he doesn’t have to work on the fields & manager these leagues for the town. Does he really have an addiction? Is there any help?

anything can become an addiction. if it is interfering with his work or disrupting his life he has a problem, and it sounds like he does. of course you will never get him to admit there is a problem, and if you think of all the other things he could be addicted to at least he picked a minor one (not crack or whores). as far as if there is help he would have to admit there is a problem first, then seek counseling. addiction is addiction, and therefor treatable if the person actually wants help.

good luck
