Why can’t I swim freestyle well?
Well, I just began swimming, it was my first time. We started in our school’s swimming pool, and I seem to lag behind the most. I obviously got put into the group that doesn’t know how to swim, but even that group is a bit too hard for me.
Well, the problem is breathing. I don’t know how to take a breath when I’m swimming freestyle, because I always try and one of two things happen:
1. Water goes up my nose somehow.
2. I have to stop because I can’t get enough breaths.
What can I do to replenish my air enough? I can’t seem to swim at all because of it. I always end up stopping every 3 seconds to stand up in the water and catch my breath, and then go back under.
So what would be a good technique to help me catch more breath?
Odd, no ones mentioned rolling yet, it would definitely help your breathing pattern and smoothness. Freestyle is a long-axis stroke, pretend theres a line going down, dividing your body in half down your face through your hips. You wanna rotate along this imaginary axis. Do this by starting a small side roll with your abs/hips and allowing your shoulders to follow, but keep your head pointed straight down.
A constant kick would help keep your butt up and make the roll easier.
The “breathing every 3″ pattern is the most common. Take three strokes. On the third, around the time when the arm enters the water, use your shoulder and body to roll in the opposite direction of the stroke-arm. now your face should be in a perfect position to just roll with the shoulder and inhale with mouth (NOT NOSE). (ex. right hand enters water, hips and shoulder rotate to left, face turns left, inhale). When you turn your head back into the water, exhale through the nose slowly (but some people do it with the mouth).
As you’re beginning, its important to slow everything down. The biggest mistake for beginners is to start thrashing and splashing in the water, which is useless and makes you sink. If you want to inhale and exhale 3-4 times to get the feeling, do a drill called popov drill or 3 stroke delay. Basically, you just take the 3 strokes and breath normally, but you keep your arm out front on the third stroke and keep kicking on your side with your face out of the water, for about 10 kicks. This way, you can get a feeling of how to breath but you can stay on this side for a long time, you wont get tired.
Make sure your strokes start off slow! only take faster strokes when you get your breathing pattern and your strokes are effective. Freestyle is not just swimming through the water. Pretend theres an imaginary ladder right under you, and every time you take a stroke, your hand is locking on a rung and you pull YOUR BODY forward along the ladder. So dont sacrifice stroke speed for stroke efficiency/power.
For the nose problem, as other people have said, exhale as your flip-turning. Also, you might be accidentally inhalling through the nose underwater. always exhale or learn to “plug your nose” when your head is pointed down in the water.
good luck with swimming,
