Its founder, Morris Michtom, is said to have taken its inspiration from the Clifford Berryman cartoon of Theodore Roosevelt, not to shoot a bear cub, to make his first bear. Ideal bears are characterized by their triangular-shaped head, and came the same style of bears for decades.
Other companies well known include American Knickerbocker, Applause, Gund and North American Bear Co, famous for its unusual character bears of famous people. Companies youngest teddy Bear in the United States, as Dakin, Eden and Russ Berrie all manufacture their bears in the Far East.

British Bears
In the early days, British manufacturers copied the look of the bear in German. Through the years, however, have changed gradually, as designers began to experiment with different shapes and materials.
The British first bear was made by JK Farnell in 1906. Other early bears were made by WJ Terry, Dean's Rag Book Co Ltd, Chad Valley and Chiltern. While Britain's first bears that copy the look of Germany, later began to change – their bodies became fatter, flatter the face and arms and shorter legs. The UK authorities have also experimented with different materials.
Artificial silk plush was first used in 1920 and sheepskin was popular for some time in the 1950s. Bears made by different companies have developed their own characteristics. Chad has the Valley are immediately recognizable by its bulbous nose, which are often compared to lumps of coal. Early Farnell bears webbed claw stitching, and Chiltern noses of the 1920s and 1930, have two very back stitches at each end.
Bear increased production after the Second World War and the existing market, has joined companies such as Plummer Wandless who specializes in the bearskin and sheep Wendy Boston which became famous for the production of the first machine washable teddy bear. Despite the success of British bears, many young companies do not survive long – some failed and others have been adopted by large companies. WJ Terry was out of business of the 1930s, and Chiltern was taken over by Chad Valley, which in turn was taken over by Palitoy. Today, only two of the big names remain Teddy Bears – Merrythought, Founded in 1930 and dean. Even if you still make traditional bears, these companies also produce many collectibles which are usually either copies of old bears or designed Bear Memories particularly memorials.
