Why are there dimples on a golf ball?
Would not it be better for the ball to be smooth (lke a billiard ball, for example) for aerodynamics, etc?
The dimples on a golf ball are really part of its aerodynamic design. Originally, golf balls were smooth, but the speed-up the more was because they had small dents and dimples in them. The dimples actually make the air more turbulent air kind of break before the ball. This only is important because a golf ball travels much faster and farther than a billiard ball, but not nearly as massive as even a model airplane.
