There are more than 1-4, usually to 8, they called high and low number. They just used to distinguish btw players in the same group. Normally, in competition, players in the same group will show their balls to other players at the start of the first tee. This is to allow other players to make sure that they use the same ball for that hole, and the different numbers on the ball will also allow the players who use the same brand of ball to separate them apart. Players also write on their ball to mark the different. Aside from that, the balls are all the same only with different numbers.
