Do I have to join a golf club to get a golf handicap? If so, is there a golf club with cheap fees?
I would like to be able to play with friends in visitor competitions but they say I must have a handicap before I can play at their club.
You don’t need to join a private club, most public courses will offer handicapping services, which typically cost about 40$ per year. You can also get your handicap through Golf Galaxy or Golfsmith, and doing that gets you some discounts as well. Once you are set up, immediately post your most recent scores (the more you can remember the better). The handicap is based on an average of the best half of your scores, so more scores is definitely more accurate.
