Golf has been confirmed as the new Olympic sport for the 2016 Games. The International Olympic Committee has voted so Rugby Sevens golf and become part program in Rio de Janeiro and in 2020.

IOC president Jacques Rogge said: "Congratulations to both federations. We all hope to great competition in 2016 and 2020.''
Golf had 63 votes for and 27 against, and Rugby 81 votes in favor and eight against.
There was some opposition to Dick Pound of Canada, arguing that the 106 members had not given the opportunity to vote in the five sports, including squash and karate which had been excluded earlier this year by the IOC executive board.
Pound said: "The fact is that not allowed to examine the seven sports.
"That is a mistake, it's not fair for the other five sports, and because I do not know why they decided this is not a transparent process.
"The meeting was to seek the guidance is not a decision that is taken or leave it.''
Peter Dawson, acting president of the International Golf Federation, had to go on the defensive after American IOC member Anita DeFrantz asked why golf clubs like Augusta could be male.
Dawson said: "We know that golf has a reputation for this, but it is important give the facts – we have 60 million golfers in the world of which 25 percent are women. single-sex clubs for men or indeed for women are 0.5 per cent and is declining, and the inclusion in the Olympics, strengthen equality in the sport.''

Harrington said: "I see nothing better than being in the Olympic village, living there and experiencing what athletes go through. That is the highest point of the Olympic Games apart from the competition.''
