What are the pros and cons of using hard golf balls?
What about soft core balls? Which are better for beginners? Which are preferred by pros? Any insight would be much appreciated! Thanks!
Golf balls come in several different compressions. The ball you use really has a lot to do with swing speed.
You have probably watched the Golf Channel and those slow motion swings and the club strikes the ball and the ball flattens out a bit as it is leaving the club head. That is the ball “compressing” off of the club head.
Now, the more speed generated in the swing, or what is referred to as club head speed, means more compression. Therefore, a player like Tiger Woods would use a very high compression golf ball. His swing speed has been measured in the 120 mph range. If Tiger were to use a softer core or lower compression ball, he could not generate the distance or spin he gets with the higher compression ball.
I cannot generate that kind of club head speed anymore so I have gone to a “softer” ball that suits my game. A higher compression ball would have the opposite effect on my game. I could not hit the ball as far nor generate the spin that I look for in a shot. All things being equal, I can hit a drive 285 yeard using my current ball choice. If used a higher compression ball, I would lose a lot of distance.
For a beginner, I would recommend a softer ball until you get the feel of the club and the ball leaving the club. Observing how far it travels, how it reacts when it hits the ground etc. These things come into play when choosing the right golf ball.
