are these sentences essential, nonessential, or apposotive, and please tell me if they are clauses or phrases. insert commas too, thanks!
1. Margo like golf but doesn’t enjoy archery.
2. The class that I like best at school is my computer programming class.
3. The Rio Grande one of the major rivers of North America forms the border between Texas and Mexico.
4.My grandparents moved to Illionois in December 1988.
The question you have is not if the sentences are essential, nonessential or appositives, but if the clauses or phrases are. Do you have any idea what you’re talking about? if you can’t do the homework, how are you going to pass the test.
Look at sentence one. Margo is the subject, like and enjoy are the verbs. No clauses or appositives.
Look at sentence two. Class is the subject and is is the verb. However, there’s another subject/verb pair. I is the subject and like is the verb. So the clause is “that I like best at school.” So is it essential? Does it identify the class? Do you need it in the sentence? Well, take it out and see. The class is my computer programming class. Now the sentence doesn’t make sentence. We need the clause to know that the class is the one I like best. So it’s essential.
Remember, usually essential clauses follow common nouns and do NOT require commas.
Non-essential follow proper nouns, like Rio Grande. That appositive is non-essential because we know which river is being talked about because it has been named. Commas are need for non-essential clauses and phrases.
