Can you believe this…?
Can you believe that Charlie Sifford, the first black PGA golfer, just got an exemption in his name today by the Northern Trust Open for a player who represents the advancement of diversity in golf. This is ridiculous! Charlie Sifford has finally gotten something named after him because now we have a black president?! Why didn’t any one honor Sifford when Tiger Woods first came along or even before Tiger with Lee Elder and Calvin Peete. Sifford said in his book, “Just Let Me Play,” that he doen’t get invited to special tournaments reserved for retired golfers because he challenged the “caucasian clause” of the PGA and they have been upset ever since. And now they are finally honoring him because of Barack Obama, how late are white people? Now they have an excuse to bring Charlie Sifford to the forefront.
You could be right on your point….but at least it’s now happening, Better late than never. The people who know what Charlie has done for the game gave him his respect years and years ago. He’s a great man.
