I need some golf help?
OK so im an 8th grader and im short(4’11) and i was wondering how tall you need to be to use a men’s set of clubs, I am wanting to tryout for the highschool golf team next year but i feel i wouldn’t be able to hit it as far or have a chance if i use kids clubs or women’s help and how good do you have to be to make a highschool golf team?? thanks
My son was in the same boat a few years ago.
He started playing Varsity Golf in the 8th Grade.
At that time I bought him Womens Clubs. They only lasted him a little over year, so I wouldn’t recommend spending too much money.
We decided on womens clubs instead of mens because they were a little lighter, shorter, and fit him better. It would have been cheaper in the long run to buy the mens clubs for that year (and for going forward) but we felt it was better for him to have a better fit and have him concentrate on better swing mechanics.
I don’t feel the distance factor made any difference. For my son at least (in the 8th Grade), there was no way he could compete with the 12th Graders on the team for distance. Where he could make up the difference was in hitting it straight and especially on and around the greens. He concentrated on his short game a lot that year. If you are able to get up and down from just off the green every/most time(s) and never 3-putt – You will more than make up for your lack of distance!
As for scores needed to make your High School Team, I don’t know – It probably varies a lot across the country. If you have a JV Team as well as a Varsity, obviously that would make it easier to represent your school.
However, remember you are only in 8th Grade, if you enjoy the game of golf and continue to play and practive, even if you don’t make the team this year you’ll likely make it another year.
Being so young, you’ll likely be the player who improves the most throughout the year, whether you make the team or not. That will put you in a good position for next year.
