In cases where extreme durability is increased prioritize flexibility in Old World bronze – also known as vegetable tanned age – is the preferred option. This is the best solution to the articles of harness, soles of moccasins, or lamellar armor style bouilli using boiled leather leather hardening methods. It is also the best method of tanning for book covers and bindings.
Season and age of the buffalo or bison hide when it was harvested is critical. Ideally, the skin should be a bull 18 months old, taken in the winter. A year and a half Old Bull has mature skin, but is still slender and flexible to work with ease. A winter cover is more important for hair in applications where you want a thick skin soft hair. If there is no requirement for the hair, you get significant savings on a hair on hide.
Many amateurs and beginners leather workers tend to avoid using the skins of buffalo or bison because of the expense. Anyone who can successfully work with cowhide can work buffalo or bison. Both have superior hiding features that have significant advantages over cowhide.
