Can a clast-supported (aka grain-supported) conglomerate have a matrix?
You either have clast-supported or matrix-supported conglomerates. I know that conglomerates don’t have to have a matrix but if you say that it’s clast-supported, does that mean that there is no matrix? If the grains are pebble to cobble sized, then there can be spaces in between them where they don’t touch even if you’re calling it clast-supported. This space could be filled with a matrix, right (even though it’s clast-supported?
It would be most unusual for a clast-supported conglomerate not to have a matrix.
All “clast-supported” means is that the clasts (large chunks) in a conglomerate or breccia are touching each other, as opposed to “matrix-supported” which means that the large clasts are not touching each other.
In general, matrix-supported conglomerates have a higher percentage of matrix (finer grained material).
