Just when we all learned to correctly pronounce Feng Shui, the Chinese art of proper placement of objects in our living spaces, comes another aesthetic Eastern ancient philosophy "Wabi-sabi". Apparently intended to be as popular as Feng Shui, Wabi-sabi addresses our relationship with all things that surround us, not just their location in our living and working environments. Quite simply, the basic principles of Wabi-sabi is simple is best, less is more. Leonard Koren, In his book "Wabi-Sabi: for Artists, Designers, Poets and Philosophers (Stonebridge Press, 1995) describes it as a beauty" … of things imperfect, impermanent and incomplete, modest and humble and unconventional things.
This really is a difficult concept to describe. Once defined, giving a shape, lost the essence that makes it what it is. Wabi-sabi began in 14th century Japan as a reaction to the rich materials, bright colors and luxurious decorations displayed by Chinese culture. Today the popularity of Wabi-sabi can be seen as a response to our high tech world in which the accuracy and duplicaton are so prized that the logos design are used front and center on clothing to identify it as a perfect match for all other products produced by the same designer. Something as accurate and definitely mass-produced Wabi-sabi is not.
Natural and crafts are Wabi-sabi, as so often show an individuality that can not be duplicated. A handknit sweater definitely qualify as Wabi-sabi. Yes, many weavers extent can the exact same jersey the same pattern instructions, even using an identical thread, but each jersey result probably have subtle differences. An individual weaver tension, which can sometimes vary from day to day, no doubt vary from knitter to knitter. Slubs and blows, even the same brand of yarn will appear in different places in the garment and differences in technique for operating the needle can sometimes be apparent at the turn of the finished weaving. This is Wabi-sabi. In contrast, mass production Knit Sweater, created using the same computer-controlled machinery ensures that all the sweaters will be exactly the same – definitely not Wabi-sabi.
Wabi-sabi prizes also dented and scratched, the bumpy and irregular, the weathered and worn. Perfection is sterile. Imperfection is beautiful. So this is a different way of looking at the points that have been recovered in the needle fall, with that ever so slightly touch the string, or by the variation in dye lots resulting in a back line that only you can see. Are these imperfections that give the sweater its unique beauty.
The concept of wabi-sabi encompasses over time. Felt, but unloved old wool sweater that can not be detached and knitted teddy bear, which ripped through the love of a child, embody all Wabi-sabi. These features suggest that the object has a story. No brand name or high price tag could change what these objects mean to the landlord. Its value is measured in a very personal and private.
So take pride in the Wabi-sabi point. Be proud of that remarkable slub in the yarn, the inelastic or a twisted neck holding stitch. You have seen a simple strand of thread into a single garment, who is alone and without equal, but best of everything dear to you – Which is Wabi-sabi.
