Various golf rules questions?

Please just answer anything you know as long as you’re sure its correct. Most correct answers gets best answer. :)

1. What must you do before you measure club-lengths for relief?

2. What is the proper way to show someone where the flag is from the bottom of an uphill par 3 hole?

3. What is the penalty for not marking a ball before picking it up to clean it?

4. What happens when your ball moves when you are getting ready to hit your shot?

5. What happens if you mark your ball out of someone’s line of put on the green and then forget to place it in its original spot?

Thanks! No guesses please. :)

1. It depends on why you’re taking relief.

If you’re taking relief from an immovable obstruction, abnormal ground condition or wrong putting green, you need to determine the nearest point of relief. You usually do so by simulating a stance with the club you would likely use, and in the direction you would most likely play the shot. It is not required that you do this, but this is recommended. (rules 24 and 25).

If you are taking relief from a lateral hazard, you have to find the point where the ball last crossed the margin of the hazard, and measure your club-lengths from there. (Rule 26)

If you declare your ball unplayable, you should mark the current position of the ball. Then you can decide whether to drop withing two club lengths, or on a line from the hole through that point. (Rule 28)

2. There is no ‘proper’ way according to the rules. The usual way is to hold the flag up high so the player can see it. You could also stand on a spot between the ball and the flag to show the player the line, but you must get off the line before the player makes a stroke. (Rule 8)

3. One stroke penalty for touching your ball without marking it. (Rule 20-1).

4. If the ball moves after you take your stance and ground your club, there is a one stroke penalty. In general, you need to replace the ball. If the ball moves after you have started your backswing, you can continue the stroke without an additional penalty.

If the ball moves after you start your backswing, but you had not grounded your club, there is no penalty. You may continue with your stroke. If you choose to stop your stroke, you do not replace the ball to its original position. Rule 18-2 and 14-5.

5. Two stroke penalty. Tim Clark did this yesterday at the WGC. Luckily for him he realized it before signing his card, so he got the two stroke penatly instead of DQ. Rule 20-7c.
