However, unless the project or activity is something I have done many times before – in very similar conditions each time, and with good records of actual hours from my past – to give a precise estimate can be quite difficult to achieve. As I try to imagine all the steps and stages of a process, and to investigate the unknown variables or things that could go wrong, it is no wonder that I think is never 100% accurate, especially for new businesses.

Did you know you that the estimate is a valuable tool for anticipating and managing these risks in the project?
When we can identify our costs and requirements schedule with relative accuracy, which reduces the risk of running out of time, resources and budget on a project.
However, with all the emphasis we put into creating accurate estimates and bids, yet seem to have difficulty developing realistic estimates of our time and effort. If we look carefully at the evidence, I think we find three basic clues about the reasons for our difficulties in estimating:
– The presence of hidden or unknown variables that are difficult or unpredictable, and sometimes even more difficult to resolve.
– Often idealistic views of our own capabilities. We tend to think we can achieve much more than what is possible in the allotted time.
– A strong human desire to please other people telling them what they want to hear. (After all, Who wants to be the bearer of bad news?)

12 tips to increase the estimate Precision

To address these shortcomings, here are 12 ideas to increase the accuracy of your estimates:
1. Keep current time "Real" database of recorded time spent on each aspect of their projects. Use data to help future projects and identify the estimated time devoted to history buffer needed to achieve a realistic work.
2. Create and use planning documents, such as specifications and project plans.
3. Make a detailed analysis of tasks, work to do.
4. Use a factor of "complexity" as a multiplier to determine if a pending bill is more or less complex than previous one.
5. Using more than one method to arrive at an estimate, and seek a middle ground between these actors.
6. Document warnings, limitations and assumptions in his proposal to limit the circumstances in which their estimates would be meaningless. (Everything that happens outside of these restrictions are considered out of reach.)
7. If the budget of the project or program may not be enough to do the job, the proposal to adjust upward or downward by one or more four projects range of criteria: cost, schedule, quality and features.
8. Think of ways simple and more efficient to organize and implement work.
9. Plan and evaluate the implementation of the project from the beginning so that the deployment does not become in a chaotic struggle to the end. For example, you could propose to use a minimum disruption approach, as a pilot or phased implementation.
10. In a very nebulous, consider an approach phase, when the first phase focuses primarily on requirements gathering and estimation.
11. Develop plans contingency, giving priority to benefits from the outset in "must-have" and "Nice-to-have" category.
12. See database lessons learned "20-20" potential new projects and integrate their best practices in the future estimates.
In conclusion, using a set dynamic techniques to estimate the scope, plan, and force their project requirements, you can improve your estimating practices, reduce and mitigate risks and significantly increase your project success rate!
