There is considerable controversy about the use of colloidal silver. Antibacterial and antiviral properties of silver (not necessarily in colloidal form) have been known since ancient Greek and Roman times, when he found that liquids like milk and wine etc would last longer when stored in an urn made of silver. There are many other examples in history. Moreover, in present times many scientific studies have validated the anti-pathogenic properties of silver, is an irrefutable scientific fact.
However, since silver has been used in colloidal form (small silver particles suspended in a liquid), there are a lot of discussion about a condition called argyria, which sometimes can result from overuse. Argyria occurs when relatively large silver particles are trapped under the skin and then react with sunlight, skin color turning gray or blue. Whenever you find a forum for discussion of colloidal silver will always find someone referring to colloidal silver is becoming blue smurf or make it appear a "".
If you Google "argyria" you will find that the appearance can be quite dramatic. This has led to a disproportionate amount of coverage to the condition that it is actually very rare. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), report of toxicity in Silver states that "while argyria occurred more often before the development of antibiotics, is now a rare event.
You can find this report to EPA by Googling "CASRN 77440-22-4. Of course, the use of colloidal silver with the advent of antibiotics reduced, so that the incidence of argyria, of course, would have reduced it. But as has been growing concern about the side effects of antibiotics and the fact that many bacteria are developing resistance to them, colloidal silver has seen rapid growth in popularity in recent years. However, the incidence of argyria has not grown with it.
Why? Since most of today manufactures superior manufacturing techniques used. This includes production small particles of silver just nanometers in length. These tiny particles can become trapped under the skin and leave the body very quickly. The trials in primates (a category that includes humans) and other animals that found that between 90 and 99% of silver is excreted by the second day (see EPA report referenced above).
Most cases today are linked to argryia homemade colloidal silver rejected by techniques by all major manufacturers of colloidal silver. Despite sensationalist false reporting making it appear that argyria abound and almost an automatic consequence of consumption of colloidal silver, argyria is not and can not occur if you are using colloidal silver made by a reputable manufacturer using silver nano-particles passing through the small body with ease and will not be submitted under the skin.
That said, although colloidal silver can be very effective against pathogens and completely safe for human beings, not all are equal colloidal silver and many claims do not justify. In Part 2 of this article, I will advise to look for a reputable manufacturer.
