Sexual identity is a funny thing. Growing up, I do not want to be a woman. I did not like the way my father treated my mother, I hated the kitchen and stay home. Me like going out, seeing the world, what happens, stay late, travel on my own for the night, taking advantage of the empty city. All things that women are encouraged to do. I do not want to be a woman.
My mother, on the other hand, always trying to make me dress as such. Dresses with flowers, fine jewelry, she always buys me presents. I favorite jeans and tees. I was good at sports, a great mathematician and started working as a young writer and journalist.
As I followed my heart and I found my place in the world, I found the men. Never had my delicate clothes, but dress to attract men was something new in my life. And very nice. Emotion to have a man to pay attention to you, the sparks created by a simple touch of the hand, were delicious things to try not to leave. I really liked sex and found great pleasure in my body. But one thing was clear. I did not want children. Too many in the world and have contributed for their approval. And then I got married.
In this time, I was in my late 20s. Before I knew my body was changing I could not understand. I started looking at families and children. To my knowledge, I began to love mine. At home, I also began to hope for more stability.
My husband was not happy. And for a fight, said, Thou art as a woman.
Wait a second. I am a woman. I was surprised. Did not he know that when I marry? That's when I realized I had to take stock of what meant to me being a woman. I look at the years of denying myself as a woman. Or want to be a man. I had been so hostile to the idea that even my husband was not sure if I were a woman?
I had to make changes quickly. I asked one of my friends who were in their 40s about their experiences. All said their bodies were screaming children in their 30s, but was a transitional phase.
I began to accept my body as it is. Accept the premenstrual syndrome. Accept my need for a home that was safe for my children. I also accept that I took time to understand and accept that, and probably would affect my relationship. And he did. The divorce came through quickly, and is better in my efforts to have a family. But at least he had opened the possibility of trying to create a single way to find someone who would be the same opinion.
They still refuse to be shy and do not want to be treated as the smallest in a relationship. I still believe in making money and be independent, and retain the name my parents gave me instead of taking my husband. But I like to have nights with women. I love talking about relationships, parents, about communication in the workplace. And make sure you also discuss politics and science. After all, there is no rule that says that women should be passive and cooperative. It's just a stereotype. We must discover for ourselves what we are. And it's fun in retrospect.
