The Great Dane breed is believed that about 400 years, but the dogs seem the Great Dane is shown in drawings in Egyptian tombs dating to 2200BC. These were Mastiff type dogs and leg shorter than today's Great Dane. It was the Germans who further developed the breed of dog we recognize today.
Some Sources suggest that race was formed by the Mastiff, boarhound, Greyhound and Irish Wolfhound. At first they were used as bull baiters, and then became popular with the nobility and were used for hunting boar and deer. In 1800 these were used for hunting big game. UK Club Great Dane began in 1885 and the American version in 1889.
The Great Dane has a short coat, thick, shiny, which does not require much maintenance. It is a relatively clean dog, which is useful because one bath can be difficult. There are six colors indicate acceptable to the race are:
* Fawn – yellow gold with a black mask
* Brindle – Fawn and black stripes Chevron
* Blue – pure steel blue without any white markings
* Black – Black pure bright
* Harlequin – white base with black blotches
* Cloak – Black and white with a solid black robe and white head and muzzle, chest and neck
Other colors do not exist but are not allowed in the show ring and therefore not encouraged by breeders.
Despite the impressive aspect of the Great Dane breed has a friendly nature, mixes well with other dogs and pets, as well as children. They become very close and loyal to non-owners, family members and frequent visitors.
They are active dogs and need to be exercised regularly. These dogs are quick to alert the family of any strangers approaching, which makes an excellent watchdog despite not bark much. It is important to start the training and socialization at an early age as they grow very quickly in large dogs and can become dominant, aggressive animals, if not trained.
As with all deep chest dogs the Great Dane is prone to gastric torsion or swelling, this can be prevented by taking precautions with feeding schemes. Some suggest that a high feeding bowl reduces the risk of swelling, but other studies say it increases the chances of the disease. Refraining from exercise immediately before or after eating reduces the risk. The race may also have problems with hip dysplasia that can be controlled with exercise and nutrition.
X-rays usually parents can certify whether their hips are healthy kids. Like all large dogs they have a slow metabolism and therefore less energy and eat less per pound of dog of the smaller breeds. As with all pure white dogs, many of the whites are deaf. Average age of the breed is between 8 and 12 years.
